Our story

GrowthShoot was established by two young women who had a deep desire in finding meaningful ways to participate in the South African agricultural sector, especially as the sector has been identified as one that has great potential to create employment, as stated in the South African government’s National Development Plan.

With both women having strong ties to the Free State province of South Africa, this led them to observe the challenges faced by the province, namely, high youth unemployment and high levels of poverty. Free State has a large population of smallholder farmers who are highly dependent on their land for their livelihood but are not able to utilise their land to its full potential. The youth who reside on these lands and the youth who have graduated in the field of agriculture are amongst the unemployed youth in Free State.

GrowthShoot aims to create scalable business models that provide agribusiness opportunities to the youth in agriculture and smallholder farmers by collaborating with established agribusinesses to accomplish this objective.

Active Founder

Dimakatso Sekhoto (Nono)

Dimakatso Sekhoto, also known as Nono, built a 7-year career in the financial services sector.
Nono developed her love and deep understand of agriculture in 2011 when she became the managing director of her family commercial farm, which was 2100 ha of farm land farming with cattle, dairy, apples and grain. Nono was then selected for several development opportunities such as business programmes for women with Gibs and EY, and for the Young Agricultural Professional Fellows Program in Oklahoma, US.

Her interest in the sector now focuses on finding ways to empower youth in agriculture in her various capacities such as the member of the National Executive Council of African Farmers Association of South Africa (AFASA), AFASA Youth Chairperson and as Board member of Thabang Holdings, an agricultural investment portfolio. Her work has attracted much attention as she has been featured on various radio stations, TV shows, print publication and on BBC Africa. Nono has spoken at international conferences and agricultural forums such a World Farmers Organisation (WFO), Brussels Briefing and UN Committee for Food Security.

Nono’s biggest motivation is driven by her belief that the work she does will contribute significantly to the transformation of the agricultural sectors in South Africa and the Continent at large.

GrowthShoot Rabbit Production

GrowthShoot is part of driving the development of rabbit production in the country, which is a niche market in South Africa.

GrowthShoot has prioritized rabbit production in the Eastern Free State based on the acquired 10 year off-take agreement from Coniglio Rabbit Meat Farm, who are rabbit meat exporters. The ultimate goal is to increase the supply of rabbit in the region, significantly enough in order to establish a rabbit meat processing plant.

GrowthShoot will do this by collaborating with youth farmers, who will be facilitated to establish their own rabbit production facilities. Growthshoot will act as the aggregator of the collaboration as it will coordinate the purchase of all inputs, organise logistics and provide ongoing support to the youth farmers.
